New York fashion week

This week has been hectic and I haven't had the time to write anything here on the blog. To make up this absence, you can read (only in Spanish) the post I did about New York fashion week at modamarcas, where I'm a contributor from now on.

I have what it could be defined as a love-hate relationship with bags. On one hand, I believe what it is said that they can make or break an outfit.I like them a lot in others, but with me the thing is different. I can't find one I really like; they are either too serious or too shabby. There's no happy medium. However, that changed when I saw the picture above at This is Naive. I could daydream about being a cabin boy who is about to be shipped overseas.

Mantengo con los bolsos una relación que podría ser definida como ambivalente. Por un lado, creo firmemente en su poder para cambiar un look. Me gustan mucho en los demás, pero conmigo la cosa cambia. Soy incapaz de encontrar uno que me guste realmente; o son demasiado serios o demasiado cutres. No hay término medio. Pero eso cambió cuando vi la foto de allá arriba en el blog de This is Naive. Cada día podría soñar despierta pensando que soy un grumete que va a embarcar a ultramar.

OK now the question is: where can I find something like this? Well, the answer came a couple of days ago, when by pure chance, I saw that they sell something similar at Le Train Bleu.The bag is called The Laurent Sauvé, "named after the French Dairyman who in 1839 was sent by the Hudson's Bay Company to the Portland Island that now bares his name." Bags with history...that's what I want.

Vale, hasta aquí todo bien. Pero, ¿dónde encuentro yo algo así? Bueno, pues hace un par de días, de pura casualidad, veo que en Le Train Bleu venden algo muy parecido. El bolso en cuestión se llama The Laurent Sauvé, en honor a un lechero francés que en 1839, fue enviado por la compañía de la bahía del Hudson hasta la isla de Portland que ahora lleva su nombre. Bolsos con historia...así, sí.

Song of the week: Street Spirit (Fade Out)

Now that streetstyle photography is so popular, we should bear in mind that is not a new thing. There is nothing completely original, but the saying "nihil novum sub sole" is carried out perfectly here. Joel Meyerowitz is far from being a pioneer, before him were Robert Frank or Cartier-Bresson. However the fact is, he was one of the first photographers, among with William Eggleston, to introduce colour. It was thanks in part to his work that people began to take it seriously, considering colour photography a form of art.

Ahora que está tan de moda la fotografía "streetstyle" conviene recordar que no es algo nuevo. Y es que si no hay nada por completo original, la máxima "nihil novum sub sole" se cumple aquí a la perfección. Joel Meyerowitz no es ni mucho menos un pionero, antes que él estuvieron Robert Frank o Cartier-Bresson. Pero hay algo que no puede negársele; la introducción del color. Gracias, entre otros a gente como él o William Eggleston, fue tomada en serio y aceptada como una forma de arte más.

It never ceases to amaze the huge amount of designers that start their own labels. Especially because the quality is unusually high. Normally, it's people who have a clear idea of what they want like Caron Callahan, who after having worked for such important designers as Derek Lam or Steven Alan has decided to create her own line of well-made, feminine and wearable clothing. A true relief for those who are tired of fashion's frantic pace.

Nunca dejaré de sorprenderme la cantidad de nuevos diseñadores que se lanzan a crear sus propias marcas. Sobre todo porque la calidad suele ser inusualmente alta. Se trata, por lo general, de gente que tiene las ideas  muy claras como en el caso de Caron Callahan, quien después de trabajar para creadores de la talla de Derek Lam o Steven Alan ha decidido crear su propia línea de ropa de calidad, femenina y ponible.Un verdadero alivio para todos los que se hayan cansado del ritmo frenético de la moda actual.

Song of the week: Louie Louie

The video is from a program called "Shindig!" very popular in America during the 60's. I highlighted The Kingsmen's perfomance but it continues with other groups and even Zsa Zsa Gabor made a guest appeareance. The quality is really good, so if you have the time you should watch it till the end.

El video es de un programa llamado "Shindig!", muy popular en América en los años 60. Yo destaco la actuación inicial de The Kingsmen, pero continúa y hasta sale Zsa Zsa Gabor. La calidad es muy buena, así que si teneís tiempo os recomiendo verlo hasta el final.

At only sixteen, Ann He is capable of taking photographs like these. They're not perfect, perhaps they aren't even intented to, but the magic is there. Time will tell.

Con sólo dieciséis años, Ann He es capaz de hacer fotografías como éstas. No son perfectas, a lo mejor ni siquiera pretenden serlo, pero la magia está ahí. Tiempo al tiempo.

Emerson Made

Did you ever entered a store and discovered yourself wanting everything? That's exactly what happened to me with EmersonMade. Every single piece is beautiful and unique. Behind the label hides a couple that some years ago decided to left New York for a farm in New Hampshire. Emerson designs the clothes and also serves as a model and stylist. Her husband Ryan, takes care of the pictures and the business. A perfect tandem that cares about details and celebrates "the joy of being alive and all the smallness that makes up the Big Beautiful".

¿Os ha pasado alguna vez eso de entrar en una tienda y quererlo todo? Bueno pues eso exactamente es lo que me ha sucedido a mí con EmersonMade. No hay nada que no sea precioso y único. Tras la marca se encuentra una pareja que hace algunos años dejó Nueva York para mudarse a una granja en New Hamphsire. Emerson se ocupa del diseño y también hace las veces de modelo y estilista. Su marido Ryan se ocupa de las fotos y la parte empresarial. Un tándem perfecto que se preocupa del más mínimo detalle y que celebra "la alegría de estar vivo y todas las pequeñas dimensiones que hacen la vida grande y hermosa".
